One of the worst ideas is to believe that the one purpose of your business is to either make money or do good.
The world needs all sorts of companies providing services and products.
What the world doesn’t need are businesses that are focused purely on financial gain and those that believe that a greater purpose must be served or the organization has no right to exist.
The issue with these single-minded approaches is the fact that a company has a variety of responsibilities, and rights. Very similar to us individuals.
Picture a person that says her sole purpose in life is to make a lot of money. What do you think of that person? What kind of life do you think she leads?
Now, picture a person that just wants to make the world a better place for everyone. What are your thoughts about this person? How do you think she gets along in life?
Many would find both somewhat irresponsible and miserable individuals.
Most probably, they both do what they do at the expense of their family and other personal relationships — and are wanted by the government for their unpaid taxes.
The point is that as citizens, we have a variety of rights and responsibilities: To take care of ourselves and those who depend on us, to create and to produce, to accumulate wealth and to consume, and to contribute and be supported by our communities. Trying to live a life with one purpose to either make money or do good does not work.
It’s the same with a business. A company has many rights and responsibilities than those of individuals.
When we finally get this idea through our heads, we as entrepreneurs can focus on executing the actual rights and responsibilities our businesses have.
As you seek to make money and make a positive contribution, you and your company are and will be perceived as socially responsible, committed to excellence, cooperative, supportive and empowering.
