I have been thinking a lot about the concept of Radical Gentleness. One of my mentors introduced this idea to me and it’s stayed with me since.
Radical Gentleness is more than a concept. It’s a practice of noticing and responding to your own needs – without judgment.
There’s nothing new to it because we all we were born with it. Just think of a newborn baby: it is 100% aware of its needs and has 0% self-judgment of responding to those needs… and getting others to respond and fulfill its needs.
We are not newborns anymore, and since then we have learned life skills so that we are not dependent on others regarding our needs. It’s now our own responsibility and right to practice Radical Gentleness. Which is not of how most of us live and certainly how we tend to approach our work.
Radical Gentleness for adults means checking in with yourself to see how you’re feeling.
In practice what it looks like is taking time for yourself when you need it, resting when you’re tired, eating when you’re hungry, crying when tears arise, having fun when you feel like it.
It means giving yourself the freedom, as much as possible, to work on the things that re-energize you and make you feel satisfied and fulfilled.
It means not beating yourself up when you’re behind on work, not berating yourself when you make a mistake, and asking for what you need from others.
It involves surrender – rather than submission – to the reality of what is right now.
Radical gentleness is the opposite of constant hustling.
But it’s not weak or passive.
It’s an expression of vulnerable resilience and authentic power.
It’s the soil and the nourishment of your ever-expanding capacity to serve others on the highest level possible.
